man faces charges
MAHANOY CITY — A borough man was charged by Mahanoy City police following an incident about 2:45 p.m. Sept. 21 at his 1107 E. Centre St. home.
Police said Joshua D. Joseph, 28, was charged with causing or risking a catastrophe, possessing instruments of crime, prohibited offensive weapons, delivery of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Police said they received a report that Joseph was making explosive devices and obtained a search warrant for the home.
Inside, police said, they found three explosive devices, materials made for making explosives as well as a large bag and two smaller bags of marijuana, a scale and other items used to grow marijuana.

MAHANOY CITY — Mahanoy City police charged a borough man after an incident about 10:30 p.m. Sept. 12 at 130 W. Centre St.
Police said Paul B. Petrus, 46, of 805 E. Mahanoy Ave., will have to appear in district court on charges of possession of drug paraphernalia, harassment, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness.
Police said officers were called to McGuire’s Pub for a fight and found Petrus being restrained and a man inside the business injured.
The injured man, Francis Styka, said he and friends just entered the business when Petrus came over, punched him in the face and also struck a woman in the arm.
Petrus was taken into custody, with a glass pipe used to smoke marijuana in his possession, and was determined to be intoxicated.
When asked why he hit Styka, police said, Petrus told them because he was having a bad day.

Harrisburg man
MAHANOY CITY — A Harrisburg man was arrested by Mahanoy City police and charged with failing to make repairs to a property he owns in the borough despite being cited code enforcement officials.
Police said Ata Richard Zandieh, 31, of 210 Lewis St., was charged with one misdemeanor count each of municipal housing code avoidance and public nuisances.
He will now have to appear on the charges before Magisterial District Judge Anthony J. Kilker, Shenandoah.
Police said Zandieh receiving a notice of violation from code enforcement in July 2011 after complaints were received about his property at 739 E. Pine St.
Zandieh failed to make corrections or repairs to the property over a three-year period despite being cited by borough code enforcement on six occasions relating to dangerous buildings, police said.
